Leonard Klein died at his home on Friday morning at 10:15 o’clock. The cause has not yet been fully determined. He was ill only a few days. Leonard was 7 years and 10 months old at the time of his passing.

Born on the farm, on May 11 [1926?], now occupied by the Henry Klein family, the boy had attended St. Anthony’s school at Hospers for almost two years, and leaves to mourn his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. B. Klein, two sisters and three brothers, namely, Mildred, Vincent, Agnes, Ambrose, and Oscar.

Funeral services were held at St. Anthony’s church at 9 o’clock Monday morning, Rev. J. Thoenissen officiating. Burial was made at St. Anthony’s cemetery.

From the Sioux Center News, March 29, 1934: Hospers news:

Funeral services were held Monday morning for Leonard Klien [Klein] , 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Klien of Hospers, who died Friday of complications following an attack of the mumps. Services for the little fellow were held in St. Anthony's Church, Rev. Father Thoenissen officiating. The lad is survived by one sister and two brothers.

His death certificate has him as Leonard Methias Klein, resident of Hospers; born May 11, 1926 in Hospers; parents Wm. B. Klein, born in Illinois, and Clara Mary Hoffmann, born in Iowa; died at 10:15 a.m. March 16, 1934; cause, pyemia [infection caused by pus-producing micro-organisms in the blood], onset 3/16/34; contributory cause, “a broken down lymphatic gland just below right ear emptied its pus in a blood vessel,” onset 3/13/34.

He does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, but there is a FindaGrave entry for him, as Leonard M. Klein, with a photo of his headstone. It adds his parents’ life dates – William B. (1896-1985) and Clara M. (1902-1962) – and two siblings, Mildred E. Klein Goebel (1924-2011) and Norbert Nicholas Klein (1935-2018).
