Obituary of Mrs. F. Schortinghuis

Mrs. Wm. Frieling Schortinghuis of Miami, Florida, died at the age of 64 years after suffering a stroke. She is survived by her husband, 3 daughters, 4 sons and one brother and sister. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. F. Stratton of the Allapattah Church of which Mrs. Schortinghuis was an active member. Until the time of her illness she was a member of the choir.

She was born in the Netherlands at Zaandam, Holland. All of her children were born there; one son preceded her in death at the age of 2 years. In 1912 the Schortinghuis family moved to America where they made their home in Sioux Center before moving to Miami, Florida. Mrs. J. Riesma and Mrs. N. Aaardema of Sioux Center are two of her daughters who mourn her loss.

The obituary of her daughter, Jeanette (Mrs. Nicolas) Aardema, posted separately, gives her parents as Willem Schortinghuis and Grietje Zwager.

The 1920 U.S. census shows the Schortinghuis family living in Welcome Township, Sioux County: Willem T. or F. (52), a farmer; wife Grietje, (50); children John (23), Nickolas (22), Jeanette (20), Willem (19), and Cristian E. (15). All were born in Holland and immigrated to the United States in 1912.

The 1930 index shows them living on the outskirts of Hialeah City, Florida: Wm. F. (62), owns a $1000 house, age 24 when married, working as a plasterer in the construction industry; wife Margaret (61), age 23 when married; son Nickolas (33), a laborer on a truck farm; son C. F. (25), married at age 25, a building construction contractor; daughter-in-law Marian (19).

The Florida Death Index on Ancestry.com has Grietje Schortinghuis, died in Dade County in 1934; record book 608, no. 438.

The Netherlands Civil Marriage Index on WieWasWie.nl has an entry for groom Willem Frieling Schortinghuis, age 24, a cigar-maker, born in Zaandam, North-Holland, parents Jan Frieling Schortinghuis, a farmhand, and Geertje Does; bride Grietje Zwager, age 22, born in Zaandam, parents Nicolaas Johannes Zwager and Grietje Kuijt; married in Zaandam 23 August 1892. WieWasWie.nl also has a death index record for her son, Pieter Schortinghuis, age 2, born in Zaandam, parents Willem Frieling Shortinghuis and Grietje Zwager, died in Zaandam 25 July 1904.
