Wendell Wayne Wiersma, 75, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Monday, May 6, 2019 at his home in Le Mars, surrounded by his family.
A time of Memory Sharing will be at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday. Private family burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Wendell’s name to the Siouxland Humane Society.
Wendell was born May 5, 1944 in Orange City, Iowa, the son of John and Dorothy (Vande Berg) Wiersma. He attended school in Alton, Iowa where he played on the basketball team. He graduated from Floyd Valley High School in 1961. Following high school, he attended Northwestern College in Orange City for one year after which he went to work as a meat cutter for Harker’s Distribution in Le Mars. While working at Harker’s, he joined the Army National Guard. After his military discharge, he went back to Harker’s where he worked as a sales rep until his retirement in 2004.
In 1993 he was united in marriage to Janet K. Haylett.
Wendell enjoyed golfing for many years before his health forced him to quit. He enjoyed watching drag racing and attended many of these events in Topeka KS. He was very interested in college basketball and journeyed with his friends to many NCAA Final Four Events. Wendell was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs and locally, he was a member of the Le Mars Eagle’s Club.
In 2004, after his retirement, he adopted his faithful dog “Buffy”. She was his constant companion and accompanied him where ever he went.
Survivors include his wife, Janet of Le Mars; two daughters: Michele Wiersma (Shane Hill) of Port St. John, FL, and Dr. Jackie (Wade) Mosley of Fayetteville, AR; two step daughters: Justine Hayslett (Jared Anderson) of Remsen, IA, and Jackie Hayslett (Josh Schmitz) of Le Mars; 6 grandchildren; two brothers: Gary (Alice) Wiersma of Sioux Falls, SD, and Delbert Wiersma of Spirit Lake, IA; his mother in law: Kathleen Miller of Lytton, IA; two sisters in law: Laurie (Dave) Bihrer of Sac City, IA, and Kerry Nelson of North Liberty, IA; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, “Sadie May”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Wiersma; his first wife Arlene Wiersma and a child of that union; his father in law: George A. Miller; his sister in law: Audrey Wiersma and “Buffy”.
