Mr. Leonard De Groot, age 68, of Orange City, passed away on April 22, 2019, at Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 27, at 11:00am, at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Todd De Rooy will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.
Leonard Dean was born on January 20, 1951, in Orange City, the son of Clarence and Jeanette (Andringa) De Groot. He was raised in northwest Iowa and graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull in 1969.
On June 12, 1973, he was united in marriage to Susan Kay Van Berkum at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The couple made their home in Orange City, where they raised their two children, Amy and Jan.
Over the years, “Len” worked at the Sioux Center Creamery, the Hull and Sioux Center Farmer’s Cooperatives, and the Rock Valley Lumber Yard. For the past twenty years he worked for Jellema Construction in Alton. He enjoyed fishing, tending to his lawn, reading, being a Cadet counselor, and English Springer Spaniels.
Mr. De Groot was a member of the Redeemer United Reformed Church, where he helped run the church’s sound system.
Survivors include his wife of more than 45 years, “Sue”; two children, Amy, and her husband, Adam Smedsrud, of Luverne, Minnesota; and Jan De Groot, and his fiancé, Shawna Acres, of Merrill; twelve grandchildren; four siblings and their spouses, Dick and Bonnie De Groot, of Tea, South Dakota; Caryl and Brian Dokter, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Ann and Evan Ter Horst, of Sioux Center; and Janna and Russ Vande Griend, of Allendale, Michigan; and Sue’s siblings and their spouses, Bill and Connie Van Berkum, and Ivan and Colleen Van Berkum, all of Sioux Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David De Groot; a granddaughter, Jessica De Groot; and two nephews, Travis Ter Horst, and Jesse Van Berkum.
