Born: 1835
Died: 1887Last Sunday the citizens of Rock Valley were pained and surprised to learn that John Tasshaller, one of their most enterprising and popular business men had deliberately committed suicide by hanging. He was widely known, and respected by all. The writer always called on “Uncle John” when in the Valley and enjoyed his society very much, and we drop a tear in his memory, while we sympathize with the family.
We copy the following particulars from a special telegram o the Sioux City Journal: “The family had gone out for a walk, he remained at home on the pretense of not feeling well. On the return of the family an entrance had to be forced into the store, and there the dead body, suspended from a beam, met their startled gaze. All attempts to resuscitate him proved unavailing.
Mr. Tasshaller came to Rock Valley from Petersburg, Iowa, where he had for a number of years taught school. He engaged in the grocery business here and until lately enjoyed a thriving trade. The falling off of the business and a small financial difficulty are suppose to have caused his temporary insanity and death. He was a prominent member of the Catholic Church.
