Johanna Roghair, 90, of Sheldon, formerly of Hospers, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 1996 at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, following a brief illness.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, at the Hospers First Christian Reformed Church with Reverend Paul Bakker officiating. Burial was prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery under the direction of Vander Ploeg's of Hospers.

Johanna Roghair was born near Carnes, Iowa on July 20, 1906, the youngest of eleven children, to Gerke and Martha (Hoekstra) Mulder. She attended country school for eight years.

She stayed at home and worked for her parents. She watched her brothers go off to the service in WWI. When she was 21 she attended Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls.

She married William "Bill" Roghair on January 1, 1932. They bought and lived on a farm near Alton. In 1961 they retired and moved into Hospers.

They made many winter trips to California to visit family and children, often bringing oranges and lemons home to share.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January of 1982. Bill died on January 27, 1984 and Johanna lived in her home until she moved to the Sheldon Christian Retirement Home in 1992.

Her family will always treasure the traditional homemade donuts and chocolate cake, fresh lemonade, the Sunday coffees, and the Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings with her rhubarb punch, all of which were held in her home until she went to the Retirement Home.

Left to treasure her memory are six children and their spouses: Sye Henry and Ruth Roghair of Alton; Mary and Leland Woudstra of Hospers; Dorothy and Norman Klynsma of Hospers; Caroline and Carlos Valencia II of Porterville, California; Sylvia and Terry Bellonger of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Wilma "Billie" and Bob Muilenburg of Hospers. There are 21 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, two grandsons, four sisters and six brothers. Memorials may be directed to the Bible League.
