From the Rock Valley Bee, July 21, 1933:

Fatal Auto Accident East of Boyden Tuesday

An automobile accident occurred Tuesday morning at a curve in highway No. 18, just east of Boyden, in which two people were killed and another injured. The car was driven by Cleo Chiconie[sic] and Marjorie Oakes and Velma Mayo, all of Sioux City, were passengers with him.

The car was apparently going too fast to make the curve in the road, and went through the fence, overturning several times. Mr. Chiconie and Miss Oakes were almost instantly killed and Miss Mayo was injured. They were taken to Sheldon. The car was demolished.

Two Killed on Highway 18

Cleo Chicoine and Marjorie Oakes of Sioux City were killed when the coupe they were riding in on their way to the lakes overturned a few miles east of Boyden. Another occupant of the car, Velm Mayo, escaped with minor injuries. The bodies were taken to Sheldon and from there to Sioux City.

The driver, Mr. Chicoine, was apparently unfamiliar with the road and did not see the S turn in the road going over the railroad tracks east of Boyden. Failing to make the turn the car swerved from the highway, throwing the occupants out. Both Mr. Chicoine and Miss Oakes had their necks broken.

The trio, two girls and one man, whose wife lives in Omaha, were on their way to the lakes early Tuesday morning when their pleasure jaunt was suddenly ended by tragedy. The car, badly wrecked, belonged to Larned F. Brown, Sioux City attorney.

Two Sioux City People Lose Lives on Way to the Lakes

Cleo Chicoine, 34, and Marjorie Oakes, 23, of Sioux City were killed and Velm “Pinkey” Mayo, 23, was injured when the L. F. Brown car driven by Chicoine, went into the ditch near Boyden Tuesday morning while coming to the lakes. Chicoine failed to observe a turn while driving at a high rate of speed.

His death certificate has Cleo Chicoine, resident of Sioux City, Iowa, occupation, restaurant, for two years; married, wife Elsie Sarenson [Sorenson]; born in April 1900 in Jefferson, South Dakota, parents Stanislous Chicoine and Arsinia Allard, both born in Canada (informant Emile Chicoine); died near Boyden, Iowa, July 18, 1933; cause, automobile accident, fast and reckless driving, broken neck; buried in Jefferson, S.D.

His FindaGrave page has him as PVT Cleophus P. “Cleo” Chicoine, buried in Saint Peters Cemetery, Jefferson, Union County, South Dakota, with a photo of his headstone. Parents Stanislas Chicoine (1854-1912) and Arsenia Allard Chicoine (1862-1945). Siblings Emile G. Chicooine (1892-1966), Fedora I. Chicoine (1896-1977), and Richard F. Chicoine (1898-1964). No wife listed.
