Richard G. Doorenbos, 92, of Boyden, died Sunday, August 23, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden. The Rev. John Goertz will officiate with interment at the Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden.

Mr. Doorenbos was born on December 26, 1905, in Boyden, the son of John and Winnie (Bleeker) Doorenbos. He attended country schools and later Boyden High School.

On April 19, 1933 he was united in marriage to Marie Horn in Boyden. After their marriage the couple lived in Boyden until 1937 when they moved to a farm southwest of Boyden. The couple farmed for many years until moving into Boyden in 1970. His wife preceded him in death on June 24, 1995. Richard moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in February 1997 and later that same year to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Richard was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden and served as an elder.

He is survived by one brother and his wife, Theodore and Olive Doorenbos of Boyden; one sister and her husband, Winifred and Gerald Dykstra of Bellflower, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; five brothers, William, Walter, Lawrence, Jacob and Alfred; and one sister, Evelyn Visser.

His FindaGrave page has him as Richard Garrit Doorenbos and his death date as 22 August 1998. Parents John Doorenbos (1871-1933) and Willemke Bleeker Doorenbos (1876-1944). Spouse, Marie Gertrude Horn Doorenbos (1908-1995). It also lists three children: Gary (unknown-1958), Marilyn (unknown-1960) and Infant Son (1951-1951). This is not accurate. Infant Son apparently was his and Marie’s only child (see their obits and the obit for “Doorenbos, newborn son of Richard, b. and d. 1951,” each posted separately). Marilyn and Gary were newborns of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Doorenbos (see their obits, posted separately), and share a joint headstone (photo on FindaGrave).

Richard’s World War II draft card (16 Oct 1940) also spells his middle name Garrit; physical description: height 5’11”, 173 pounds, complexion dark brown [but he is Caucasian], blue eyes, brown hair; next of kin Joe A. Horn.
