Melvin L. Schulz, 88, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at the Abbey of Le Mars.

Funeral services will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Reverend Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ireton, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Mauer–Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present 5-7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Saturday.

Melvin Lester Schulz was born on July 16, 1920, on the family farm in Grant Township, rural Craig, Iowa, to Herman and Amelia (Onken) Schulz. He was raised on the farm and attended the Craig Independent School. Following school, he assisted his family and neighbors with farming.

On June 22, 1947, Melvin and Virginia Sanow were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple made their home on a farm south of Maurice, Iowa. In 1971 Melvin and his family moved near Le Mars, where Melvin assisted Ed Ellensohn with farming. He later went to work for Le Mars Community Schools as a custodian. He was with the school for 14 years prior to his retirement.

Melvin was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He loved to reminisce and tell stories. Most of all Melvin enjoyed his vegetable gardening.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Virginia of Le Mars; two daughters, Margaret (Dan) Huls and Nancy Schulz, both of Le Mars; four sons, Roger Schulz of Orange City, Iowa, Rodney (Linda) Schulz of Sioux City, Iowa, and Douglas (Judy) Schulz and Thomas (Maria) Schulz, both of Le Mars: 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister, Arlene McHale of Craig, Iowa; a brother, Herman (Marlene) Schulz of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Bennie Ahrendt of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Kim Schulz; two sisters, Helen Hartman and Gladys Ahrendt; a brother, Kenneth Schulz; two brothers-in-law, Henry McHale and Alfred Hartman; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Schulz and Mildred Schulz.
