IMPRESSIVE RITES AT ALTON IN MEMORY OF NICK SCHUMACHER

Nicholas “Nick” Schumacher, one of Alton’s earliest and most respected business men, died at his home Friday night, February 3rd, after an illness of several months.

He was born June 2, 1883 at Kundorf, Luxembourg, and came to the United States in the year 1907. He was at Alton for a short time, then went west to the Indian Mission at St. Ignatius, returning to Alton in 1910, when he purchased the Peter Kass blacksmith shop in partnership with his brother Henry. After the death of the latter, he became sole owner and was a skilled artisan known far and wide for his reliable work. In recent years his son Oscar joined him in the shop and continued to carry on ably during his father’s illness.

Mr. Schumacher married Miss Mary Meyers January 23, 1911, and the couple observed their golden wedding very quietly at their home on that date, this year.

Surviving are Mrs. Schumacher and five sons: Reverend George of Dow City, Iowa; Reverend Tony of Sauk City, Wisconsin; Dr. Peter of Le Mars; Leo of Washington, Iowa; Oscar of Alton.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Madeline, in 1939; three brothers: Henry of Alton, Joe of Granville, and a brother in Luxembourg; and one sister, Mrs. Mike Goergen of Granville.

Mr. Schumacher was a fine citizen and devoted member of his church, St. Mary’s where he was trustee and sang in the choir for 45 years. He was treasurer for many years of the Northwest Iowa Blacksmith Association and treasurer of the Luxembourger Brotherhood of Granville, also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 o’clock in St. Mary’s Church, with Reverend George Schumacher as celebrant of the Requiem High Mass; Reverend Tony Schumacher, Deacon; Reverend Leander Friedman of Hawarden Sub-Deacon; Reverend Richard Zenk, Sioux City, master of ceremonies. Burial was in the local St. Mary’s Cemetery, 28 priest in attendance at the Mass. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Schumacher.
