DEATH OF MRS. VAN OORT

Mrs. Alice Van Oort passed away in a hospital in Cherokee, Iowa, where she had been taken a few days earlier for treatment. She had not been well for some time past, and continued to fail and was finally taken to Cherokee.

Mrs. Van Oort was thirty-six years of age at the time of her death. Most of her life was spent in Sioux county. She was born at Sioux Center and spent her early life there. She was married to Mr. Van Oort fourteen years ago. They lived on a farm in Minnesota for a while and then moved to Chicago, later moving to Rock Valley.

Mrs. Van Oort is survived by two daughters, Delvie, 13 years old and Ethel, 10 years old. She also leaves four brothers and six sisters, Fred, George and Charles, of Sioux Center; Albert of Doon; Jennie Vande Vegte and Cora Vande Weerd, of Rock Valley; Anna Brandts, Orange City; Mary Niessing, Sioux Center; Della Lutgers and Hatie [Hattie?] Koel, Hull. One sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the First Reformed church in Sioux Center and the remains were buried in the cemetery at that place. Rev. Tyler of Rock Valley had charge of the services. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. H. Bastemeyer, Miss Zoe Smith, Mrs. Jerry Steck and A. R. Eggleston.

Mrs. Van Oort of Rock Valley Interred Here

Mrs. Alice Van Oort of Rock Valley died of a short illness Thursday in the State Hospital at Cherokee. Mrs. Van Oort was 36 years old.

Alice Kuhl was born on a farm near here and lived in the vicinity of Sioux Center until 1919 when she was married to H. Van Oort and moved to Rock Valley. There she lived for three years before moving to Edgerton, Minn., and then to Thornton, Ill., where she lived until 1929 at which time Mrs. Van Oort returned to make her home in Rock Valley.

Mrs. Van Oort is survived by two daughters, Delvie, 13, and Ethel, 8; her husband and six sisters, Mrs. H. Vander Vegte, Mrs. Harm Vander Weerd, of Rock Valley; Mrs. C. Ludjians and Mrs. Herbert Koel, of Hull; Mrs. Henry Nissink of Sioux Center, and Mrs. John Brandts of Orange City; and four brothers, Fred C., Charles, George of Sioux Center and Albert J. of Doon.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Methodist Church.

Her death certificate has Alice Van Oordt, wife of Henry van Oordt; residence Rock Valley; born June 2, 1897 in Sioux County; parents Chas Kuhl, born in Germany and Della Mulder, born in Holland; died in the Cherokee State Hospital, where she had been for 12 days, at 2:30 p.m. March 30, 1933; cause, broncho pneumonia; contributory cause, manic depressive, depressed and agitated; buried at Sioux Center. An autopsy was performed.

Entries in the Sioux County Cemetery Index are for surnames spelled either Oordt or Van Oort. She does not appear under either surname. However, there is a FindaGrave page for her: Alice Kuhl Van Oordt, birth and death dates as above, buried in Memory Gardens, Sioux Center; parents Charles Kuhl (1866-1922) and Della Mulder Kuhl (1868-1909); 8 of her siblings are listed; one child listed, Delvia Van Oort Powers (1919-2008). No husband listed, although a note added to the page says she married Henry Van Oordt in Sioux Center on Sept. 5, 1919.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1919/1920 has groom Henry Van Oort, age 23, residence Edgerton, Minn., a buttermaker, born in Hospers, Iowa, parents Wien H. Van Oort and Ida Van Der Stoep; bride Alice Kuhl, age 23, residence Sioux Center, Iowa, born in Sioux Center, parents Charlie Kuhl and Della Mulder; married in Sioux Center September 5, 1919.

In the 1920 census they are living in Pipestone, Minnesota, where Henry is a buttermaker; their surname is spelled Van Oort; their daughter’s name is given as Windellvey and her age as 2. They were not readily located in the 1930 census.
