Reverend Jesse E. Rolston, minister of the Church of the Brethren, west of Sheldon since 1894 and a successful Sioux County farmer for many years, died Monday, August 22. He was 90 years of age.

Reverend Rolston had served 29 years as a member of the County Board of Education in Sioux County, and 25 years as secretary of the local board of Grant Township.

Funeral services were held at the Church of the Brethren Wednesday, August 24. Burial was at Matlock.

Jesse Edward Rolston was born January 17, 1865, on a farm in Virginia. He was educated in the public schools and attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia four years.

He came west in 1893 from Virginia, and after teaching a short time at Kingsley went to Sheldon in 1894 to teach and assist in the ministry.

In 1886 he was elected and licensed to the ministry of the Church of the Brethren. He was ordained to the full ministry of the church in 1891. He was married November 28,1900, at Sheldon to Ada Leach Kimmel, daughter of the later Senator and Mrs. W.C. Kimmel. Surviving are his wife and eleven children; 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In 1886 he was ordained as an elder or bishop of the Church of the Brethren, west of Sheldon in Sioux County. He served the Church until 1949. It was largely the practice of the early church, especially in the rural areas to elect one or more who would serve the church in the ministry without salary or pay. Thus Reverend Rolston gave 64 years of service as a free gift to his church.

He had also served on the Farm Debt Advisory Board in Sioux County, and was a director in the Farmer’s Co-op Elevator.

Surviving children are: Paul of Sheldon, (Anna) Mrs. Ray Schechter of Worthington, Wendell doing Christian volunteer work in Indo-China, Lawrence of Springfield, Missouri, Owen of Hampshire, Illinois, (Dorothy) Mrs. Cornelius Landhuis of Harris, Magrum and Rufus of Sheldon, (Arlene) Mrs. Wallace English of Sanborn, (Evelyn) Mrs. Waldo Winter of Westbrook, Minnesota and (Ada Ruth) Mrs. Warren Cox of Ashton.
