There is an entry in the Sioux County Cemetery Index for “Van Sloten, Mother, b. 1852, d. 1928, ss Father, Hope Cem Hull IA.” The corresponding entry for “Father, b. 1850, d. 1931” proved to be William Van Sloten, Sr., whose obituary is posted separately. His obit says that he married Jakopte Vande Pol in the Netherlands in 1875, that they were the parents of eight children, and that she died October 2, 1928.

FindaGrave.com has William Van Sloten, 1850-1931; spouse Jessie Van Sloten (1852-1928). A photo of their joint headstone identifies them simply as Van Sloten “Father” and “Mother” with the birth and death years.

Her death certificate gives her as Jacoba Van Sloten, wife of William Van Sloten; born February 29, 1852 in Holland; parents John Vander Pol and Pietje Oostrenk; resident of the U.S. 34 years and of Hull 10 years; died in Hull at 1 a.m. January 2, 1928; cause, diabetic coma; contributory cause, diabetes, duration 6[?] years; buried in Hope Cemetery, Hull.

With a correct death date in hand, the Sioux County Index (Hull) was searched and the following obituary located in the January 6, 1928 issue:

MRS. VAN SLOTEN, SR. DIES

This community was called upon again, last Sunday night, to mourn the loss of another of its respected members, when Mrs. Wm. VanSloten, Sr., passed from this earth to her heavenly home.

Mrs. Jacopje VanSloten, nee VanderPol, was born February 29, 1852, at Dorenspike, Province of Gelderland, Netherlands. At the age of 23 years she was united in marriage to Mr. Wm. Van Sloten and in the year 1894 they came to this country, settling in this community in which they have resided continuously.

Besides the aged husband, she is survived by three sons and five daughters, namely: Lammert, of Hull; Mrs. Hattie Vander Sluis, of Yakima, Wash.; John, of Hull; Mrs. Nellie Humme, of Perkins; Wm. of Hull; Mrs. May Mulder, of Alvord; Mrs. Anna DeGraaf, of Doon; and Mrs. Joseph Kuyper, of Hull; forty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from the home at 1 o’clock and from the First Reformed church at 1:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. G. H. Douwstra. The Index wishes to join with the many friends of the bereaved family in extending sincere sympathy.
