Ray Vander Naald, age 72, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Memorial Services will be Friday, November 2, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa. Rev. Paul Van Maaren officiating.

Graveside Services will be Friday, November 2, prior to the Memorial Service, at 10:00 A.M. at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 1, from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.

Ray Edward Vander Naald, Jr. was born on September 7, 1946 in Hospers, Iowa. He was the son of Ray, Sr. and Pearl (Vogel) Vander Naald. The first of three children, moved to Sanborn, Iowa at an early age where he attended school and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1964. Ray served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968. He was stationed in the states and Germany.
He was united in marriage to Berdina Jilderda of Sheldon, Iowa on June 8, 1973. They lived in Sheldon where Ray worked at Kenny’s Super Value until it closed. He stayed in the grocery business for a short time, then sold furniture, and later was the manager of the Kum & Go in Sanborn for 10 years, before retiring. He worked for a few years doing lawn care with John Meyer. He then became a volunteer senior companion, to the present time.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon.
Ray enjoyed bowling, camping, his family and grandkids. His children have good memories of their father being very personable, joking around, and waking them up with an army cadence jingle of, “You’re in the Army now", and playing cards and games.
He passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 45 years, Berdina Vander Naald of Sheldon, IA; daughter, Denise Portz of Sheldon, IA; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Katie Vander Naald of Granville, IA; 3 grandchildren; one brother, Arthur and wife Mary Vander Naald of Summerset, KY; one sister, Karen Trei of Ashton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Shantel.
