OBITUARY

Alta Eliza Sheldon was born in Orwell, Vermont, March 7, 1851, and died after a very brief illness at her home in Long Beach, California, October 12, 1930, lacking but four months and twenty-three days of being eighty years old.

She was married October 23, 1879, to George A. Sheldon of Fair Haven, Vermont. To this union were born three children—Sarah Eliza, dying in infancy, Emma Louise, who made her home with her mother, and Kirk Clayton, who with his wife and daughters, Mildred and Marguerite, reside in Hull, Iowa. She is also survived by a brother, Kirk White of Winona, Minnesota.

The family moved to Hull, Iowa, in 1881 and settled on the Sheldon homestead just north of town where they resided until the spring of 1905, when they moved into town and where Mr. Sheldon passed away August 3, 1918. Mrs. Sheldon and daughter Emma moved to Long Beach, California in 1919, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Sheldon was a life long active member of the church, being a charter member of the Congregational church of Hull which is now the American Reformed church. Since going to California, her devoted faithful service in the Calvary Presbyterian church won for her the love and esteem of a large circle of friends who mourn her loss.

The Woman’s Society of the Calvary Presbyterian church held a beautiful service in her memory at their monthly meeting. The funeral services were held in Long Beach in the Coon Funeral Parlors, October 17. Dr. Klene, who had been her pastor in the eleven years she has resided in Long Beach, officiated and spoke of the beautiful Christian life of Mrs. Sheldon and how her influence will live always in the lives of those who knew her.

She was a member of the W.C.T.U. and Women’s City Club of Long Beach, and while in Hull was an active member of the Women’s Relief Corps.
