Mrs. Walter Bakker, whose home was southeast of Hawarden, passed away at 9 o'clock Monday evening at the Hawarden Hospital. She submitted to an operation Saturday and death followed as compilations developed.

Lena Smit was born in Haarlem, Holland, June 14, 1906, and departed this life in Hawarden on March 15, 1943, at the age of 36 years, 9 months and 1 day. At the age of eight years she came to Nova Scotia, Canada, and a couple of years later she came to Orange City.

She was united in marriage with Walter Bakker October 29, 1923 at Slayton, Minnesota, and they made their home in Minnesota four years. They then moved to South Dakota where they lived eight years, after which they came to Iowa, living on a farm southeast of this city.

She is survived by her husband and seven children, the youngest being about two years of age. The children are Gysbert, Albertha, Janette, Elizabeth, Mary, Gertrude and Walter Henry. She also leaves six brothers, Peter Smit of Volga, South Dakota; Hank and Anthony Smit of Bellingham, Washington; Janus and Gerrit Smit of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and three sisters, Elizabeth of Canada; Mrs. Goudawaard of Rock Valley and Piebje, who resides in Holland. Her parents and two sisters preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bakker was a kind mother and a dutiful wife. In caring for her family, she made many sacrifices so that they might enjoy life to its fullest extent. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden and was a faithful attendant, together with her family, when her health permitted. Her death is a severe blow to her husband and children, who have been deprived of the counsel and guidance of a loving wife and mother, and sincere sympathy is extended to them in their sorrow.

Funeral services will be held at the Barnard Funeral Home at 1:30 and at the Lutheran Church in Hawarden at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Reverennd C.A. Burckhart in charge. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery.
