From the Hawarden Independent, September 5, 1935:

Death Follows Long Illness – Mrs. Fred M. Squires Passed Away Sunday Morning – Was 55 Years of Age and Lived in the Vicinity of Hawarden and Akron All Her Life

“Mrs. Fred M. Squires, a lifelong resident of Akron and Hawarden communities, passed away at her home in this city about 1 o’clock Sunday morning following a long illness. Mrs. Squires’ health began to fail about a year ago although she was bedfast for only about four weeks preceding her death. Her condition was such that physicians in attendance held little hope for her recovery and her strength gradually ebbed until death claimed her.

“Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Associated church here with Rev. T. H. Harding in charge. Interment was made in the Akron cemetery.

“Ada Royalty was born at Akron Jan. 25, 1880, and died Sept. 1, 1935, at the age of 55 years, 7 months and 6 days. She grew to young womanhood at Akron and on Feb. 25, 1903, was united in marriage with Fred M. Squires. They made their homes on farms in the vicinity of Akron and Chatsworth for many years and a number of years ago moved to the Hawarden community. For the past few years they lived on a farm, five miles northeast of Hawarden, until last spring when they discontinued farming and have since made their home in town.

“Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters and one son, Mrs. Vera Nienkirk of Adrian, Minn.’ Mrs. Ethel Crowder and Miss Ada Squires of Rushmore, Minn. [Yes, the son’s name was omitted.] She also leaves three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. A. M. Miner and Mrs. John Rush of Sioux City; Mrs. Jesse Mowers of Brainerd, Minn.; Ralph Royalty of Hawarden and Dan Royalty of Humboldt, S.D. She is also survived by five grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.”
