LONG ILLNESS PROVEN FATAL--MRS.RALPH KURVINK SUCCUMBS SUNDAY EVENING--FUNERAL RITES FOR 51 YEAR OLD WOMAN HELD WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON --BURIAL IN CANTON

Mrs. Ralph Kurvink, a resident of Hawarden for the past 15 years, passed away at her home at 10:45 Sunday evening following a long illness. For many years Mrs. Kurvink had not enjoyed good health. Seven years ago she submitted to a major operation at the Hawarden Hospital and for along time her life hung in the balance. However, for two years after she recovered from the operation, she enjoyed better health. Last February she went to Iowa City to seek medical aid but was advised that nothing could be done to help her. Since then she was bedfast continuously and grew weaker gradually until death claimed her.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home with the Reverend Clarence W. Hansom and the Reverend J.H. Flaming in charge. Interment was made in the Canton Cemetery.

Lottie Ellen Brenner, daughter of the late Harris and Melinda (Spicer) Brenner, was born at Canton January 1, 1891, and so was some over 51 years of age at the time of her death. She grew to young womanhood at Canton and was married to Millard Powell at that place in 1909. Three children were born to this union, Mrs. Dorothy Sparks, Mrs. Hazel Gerber and Darold Powell. Mr. Powell was killed in 1915 when struck by a train while working on the railroad.

She was united in marriage with Ralph Kurvink at Primghar in 1917. They made their home in Canton after their marriage but later for three years they lived in California, hoping that the climate would prove beneficial for her health. For the past 15 years she lived in Hawarden. She was united with the Congregational Church at Canton and after coming to Hawarden attended the Associated Church when her health permitted.

She is survived by her husband and seven children, Mrs. Dorothy Sparks and Francis Kurvink of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Hazel Gerber of Hawthorne, California; Darold Powell of Madison, South Dakota; and Val Jean, Marian and Donna at home. She also leaves two sisters and one brother, Mrs. E.B. Hannett of Garretson, South Dakota; Roy Brenner of Huron, South Dakota, and Mrs. F.D. Schoenauer of Mitchell, South Dakota. Her parents and one brother preceded her in death. There is one grandchild, Stanley Darold Powell, and one grandchild, Dennis Lee Berger, passed away.

Throughout her long sickness and her intense suffering, Mrs. Kurvink bore her burden with great fortitude, seldom complaining. Her husband and children did everything possible to alleviate her suffering. Knowing that her condition was critical her daughters, Mrs. Sparks and Mrs. Gerber, and her son Francis came from California about a month ago to see her and spent a week here. They did not come for the funeral.
