Mrs. Catharina Ostermann, Lasse was born on the 28th of February, 1837 in Hanover, Germany. In her infancy she was received into the covenant of God by Holy Baptism. Later on after due instructions in the Lutheran faith, she was confirmed. In the year 1858 she was united in marriage to John Ostermann. To this union was blest with five children, three sons and two daughters of which however preceded their mother into eternity, namely one daughter, who died in her infancy, and her son Henry in the prime of his life at the age of 36 years , whose name is undoubtly vividly remembered by many in this community.

In the year 1884 the Ostermann family emigrated to America making Lowden, Iowa, their home where Mr. Ostermann worked two years for a Railroad Company. Thence they came west to Sioux County, settling on a farm five miles southeast of Maurice, where they remained seven years. In 1893 they moved to Kansas near Sylvan Grove, where they continued farming. On the 19 of January the deceased was deprived of her spouse by death after having lived together in a peaceful and happy union for 47 years.

Mrs. Ostermann, now a widow, continued farming with her son Christ for three years after the demise of her husband, when she retired coming back to Sioux County to make her future home with her only daughter, Wilhelmine, the wife of Henry E. Mueller.

The deceased was an ardent and consistent member of the Lutheran Church. During the greater part of her long sojourn in this world the deceased enjoyed good health. About fourteen months ago, however, she became afflicted with dropsy, which disease now began its slow; but fatal and destroying work her vital tissues poisoning her entire system. In all her trials and afflictions she was a patient sufferer, gladly submitting herself to the will of her Lord looking forward to Christ her only hope, in whom she trusted until she closed her weary eyes and fell asleep in the arms of her Savior, which occurred on the 9th of May in the early hours of 3 o’clock, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 11 days. She leaves to mourn their loss her sons: George of Ocheyedan, and Christ of Storm Lake, Iowa, her daughter, Mrs. Henry R. Mueller, 25 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

The funeral services, conducted by Reverend C.D. Nuoffer, took place Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Reading Township and was attended by a large concourse of relations and friends. The body was laid to rest in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. The bereaved have the sincere sympathy of everyone in their great loss.

Pallbearers were: Henry Becker, Casper Herdbuch, Fred Dettmer, August, Herman and Louie Vander Hamm.
