Friends in Hull and Boyden were informed recently of the death of a former resident, Mr. Fred B. Story, 84 years of age and a Veteran of the Spanish-American War. The Estherville Reporter carried the following account:

Frederick B. Story, 84, Emmet county's last surviving Spanish-American War veteran and long-time Estherville resident passed away [October 30, 1961] at the Holy Family Hospital. In failing health for some time, Mr. Story's death was attributed to complications of advanced age.

Mr. Story served with Co. E, 52nd Iowa Volunteers during the Spanish-American War and at the time of his death, was senior vice commander of the Department of Iowa Spanish-American War Veterans. He and Mrs. Story had attended the state encampment of S-A Veterans in June and this fall had made a trip to Little Rock, Arkansas to attend the national encampment. For many years, they had attended the national encampment each year. Mr. Story was a member of Camp Duncan 17 of Algona.

For the past several years, he had served as bailiff for the Emmet County District Court.

Born August 15, 1877 at Boyden, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Story. He attended schools in that area.

On October 1, 1903, he was united in marriage to Mabel Claire Finch at Orange city. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Story lived at Hull before moving to Sioux Falls, S.D. In 1913 they moved from Sioux Falls to Estherville and since that time have continued to make their home here. He was a florist and in the seed and grain business before his retirement.

Surviving his death are his widow, two sons, Erwin J. and Glenn L., both of Estherville; two daughters, Mrs. Ray (Thelma) Rasmussen, Petersburg, Minn.; and Mrs. Cecil (Kathryn) Christiansen, Ringsted; three grandsons, Jerome Rasmussen of Petersburg, and Craig and Frederick Christiansen of Ringsted.

Military funeral services were held with an 11 a.m. family service at Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home and a 2 p.m. service at First Methodist Church, the Rev. William R. Noland officiated. Interment was to be in East Side Cemetery.
