Joseph Oberman, one of the first settlers of Granville, died Wednesday, March 24, after an illness of 10 days from blood poisoning. All medical aid was rendered to no avail.

Mr. Oberman was born on October 10, 1862, being aged 57 years at the time of his death. He was married in 1887 to Miss Mary Jane Schemmel at New Vienna by the late Reverend F.N. Pape. Two weeks later he moved to Granville which place has ever since been his home. He was ever a good citizen, always interested in home, religion and matters concerning the welfare of the public. For 22 years he faithfully served the town as councilman and his place will be hard to fill, his presences sadly missed.

After his arrival in Granville he followed the carpenter trade until 1901 and in 1889 also engaged in the furniture, hardware and undertaking business which he successfully conducted up to the time id his last illness.

Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Oberman, all of whom were present at the bedside of their father, as follows: Mary, Joseph, Laurence, George, Aloysius, Lauretta, Edmund, Edmunda, Olivia, Isidore, and four grandchildren; and the following brothers and sisters: Henry of Granville, Frank and Peter of New Vienna, Mrs. Clem Schemmel, Tintah, Minnesota, Mrs. Theodore Reicher, Dyersville, Mrs. Theodore Schlichte, New Vienna.

Funeral services were held last Saturday morning at 9:30. Mass and funeral services conducted by Reverend J. A. Gerleman, Interment at the family lot at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joseph Bachman, Ben Diers, Joe Miller, Frank Schlagel, Herman Bennier, Anton Neuroth.
