Oscar Dominic Block, 97, of Remsen, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Bavarian Meadows in Remsen, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 25, 10:30 am, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Fr. William McCarthy officiating, Fr. Craig Collison concelebrating and Deacon Rick Roder assisting. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. There will be a Knights of Columbus rosary and a vigil prayer service at 5p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Oscar was born on Oct 9, 1920 to John and Cecelia (Jungers) Block in rural Hospers, IA. He received his education at St. Anthony’s School in Hospers.

He was united in marriage to Bernice C. Schmit on January 31, 1950, in Hospers. Oscar was a carpenter, farmer and insurance agent. They farmed in Hospers until 1963, when they moved to a farm in Remsen, Iowa. Oscar served in the Army during WWII . Oscar will be remembered for his love of farming and nature, singing, playing cards, golf and baseball (he loved his Cardinals), and willingness to always learn something new.

He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Post 3328 of Remsen and the Oktoberfest Choir.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Julie Hoffman (Jim Norwood) of Weston, MO; Charles (Mary) of Ames, IA; Patricia (Steve) Herbster of Topeka, KS; Phyllis (Matt) Even of Algona, IA; Ronald (Maritza) of Mt. Lebanon, PA; Sharon (Ron) Ragsdale of Waverly, IA; Rosalie (Paul) Ruba of Manchester, IA; Daniel (Rochelle) of Remsen, Thomas (Amy) of Panora, IA and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, in February 2016, his parents, a brother Ambrose, a sister Frances O’Kane, a son-in-law, Jim Hoffman, and a grandson, Brian Hoffman.

Casket bearers will be Charles Block, Ronald Block, Daniel Block, Thomas Block, Michael Block, and Mark Herbster.

Honorary bearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Oscar’s honor may be made to St. Mary’s Parish and school.
