Mr. Philip Berkenpas, age 66, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at his residence.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, June 27, at 10:00am, at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Todd De Rooy will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Philip Gordon was born on October 5, 1951, in Orange City, the son of Leonard and Anna Marie Berkenpas. He was raised in Carnes and attended Floyd Valley School.

On August 30, 1974, he married Cheryl Lynn De Jong in Orange City, Iowa. They made their home in Orange City, where they are members of the Redeemer United Reformed Church. Phil worked at Alton Premium Feeds and later Darling International.

“Berk” enjoyed fishing, smoking meat, visiting with family and friends, and loved being called Grampa.

Survivors include his wife of more than 43 years; three sons and their wives, Eric and Kathryn Berkenpas, and their children, Ella Mae and Joshua; Nic and Tisha Berkenpas, and their children, Liliana and Daniel; and Matt and Sonya Berkenpas, and their daughter, Gabriela; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Berkenpas, of Spencer; and Jan Berkenpas, of Fair Oaks, California; a brother and his wife, Jim and Sharon Berkenpas, of Sioux Center; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and his wife, Troy and Melanie Leusink.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ron Berkenpas and Rog Berkenpas; and a sister, Marianne Wassenaar.

Memorials may be directed to Zestos or the Redeemer United Reformed Church.
