Len Moret received the following telegram from Washington, D.C: Deeply regret to inform you that Private William Monster, Infantry, is officially reported as killed in action on November 8th.

This bit of news comes as a terrible shock to his friends of Mr. Monster. He was well known in this vicinity having lived here for the past five years. Two of these years he was engaged on the Moret farm, and when not otherwise at work-he made his home with the Len Moret family. Deceased parents reside in Netherlands, together with all of his relatives. He was a fine, ambitious young man, always willing and ready to help. His death means a great loss. One more of Boyden's young men has made the supreme sacrifice. Following is his last letter received by the Moret family, written October 4th. You will note that he was well and happy at that time, never thinking that his turn was so near to die on the bloody battlefields of France, that peace might be restored.

Dear Folks---I will write and let you know that I am well and feeling fine, and hope you folks are all the same. How are you getting along with your crops? I suppose you had a pretty good crop this year as they say that the crops were all good all over the states. I have never received any mail from you since I left Camp Travis. I have received one letter from your brother John. Did you ever receive that letter and also that souvenir I sent you from France? I wish you would write and let me know. I have already gone over the top once in the month of September. I don't know when I'll have to go again. I hope that the war will be over by next spring, so I can get back and go to work on the farm. The war news in the papers looks pretty good over here at all times. We have had lots of rain and bad weather. We don't have very much nice weather. Well I think I will close for this time as I have not much time to write. Hoping that you get this letter and answer soon, I will say good-bye.

Pvt. Wm. Monster
