Lawrence Miller, 71, former mayor and businessman of Paullina, died April 17 after a lengthy illness at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 21, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville with Reverend Gary Synder officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Fisch Funeral Home is in charge.

He was born August 17, 1906 at Alton. He was presently the owner and operator of Miller Motel in Paullina and also past part-owner of Fredricks Builders Store of Paullina. He was past mayor for seven years in Paullina and council for 16 years. He was a fireman for Alton and Paullina departments for a combined number of 48 years. He served as director of civil defense for Paullina.

His parents were Christopher and Anna Baune Miller. His wife Catherine Ver Hoef. They were married October 2, 1931 at Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife Catherine of Paullina, one son, Loren (Larry) Miller of Sioux City, four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Phyllis) Sholly of Eagle Grove, Mrs. R.J. (Caroline) Manna of Des Moines, Mrs. Arlin (Janice) Sage of Abilene, Texas, Mrs. Rodney (Kay) Calson of Paullina, 19 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Alvina) Steichen of Alton, Mrs. Joe (Loretta) Stoos of Marion, Iowa.

Mr. Miller was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Granville. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 grandchildren, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
