From the Alton Democrat, April 26, 1929, Hospers news:

O. A. MONSON CALLED BEYOND LAST FRIDAY
For Many Years Was Leader in Hospers Community Life – Organized Band

Hospers was shocked last Friday morning by the news of the death of O. A. Monson. Mr. Monson was a patient in the St. Joseph hospital, Sioux City, where he underwent a very serious operation, but reports were to the effect that he was getting along as well as could be expected under the circumstances, until Friday morning when the sad news came. Mrs. Monson and their son Elmer had been constantly at his bedside.

Mr. Monson lived in Hospers for many years. He began his career as a section foreman, later going into the mercantile business with his brother-in-law, J. P. Wierda. Some years ago, his health failing him, it was thought best for him to seek out of doors employment so he sold his interest in the store to Mr. Wierda. Later, however, Mr. Monson again entered the mercantile field and operated a grocery store at Rock Valley but again ill health interfered and he sold out and moved back with his family to Hospers.

He was an outstanding man in this community. A talented musician, he devoted a great deal of his time to that art and was instrumental in giving the town a good band. He led the choir and orchestra, served as councilman and assumed various places of responsibility, never refusing to serve when his services were asked.

He is survived by Mrs. Monson, his son Oscar of Randolph, Neb.; his son Elmer who attends school in South Dakota; one daughter, Sadie, who teaches school; and son Clifford, nine years old; who feel the loss of husband and father beyond power of words. Mr. Monson also has two sisters who reside in Minnesota and a brother in Montana, besides a host of friends who mourn with the family, his death.

Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and at the First Presbyterian church, of which he was a member, at two o’clock, Rev. R. B. Budd officiating. In honor of his memory all places of business were closed during the funeral and a large concourse of people paid their last respects to the departed.
