Died: July 24, 1932

Miss Agnes McManaman, a resident of Hawarden since childhood, passed away at her home in this city at 6 o'clock Sunday evening following a lingering illness. Her health had been failing for three years and some over two years ago she submitted to a serious operation from which she never fully recovered. Although she had been poorly for a long time she was bedfast only a little over two weeks preceding her death.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in this city at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning with Requiem High Mass being celebrated. The Mass was read by Reverend Father C.P. Conway of Hawarden and he was assisted by Reverend Father J.D. Kurley of Beresford and Reverend Father Schroeder of Akron. Members of the Royal Neighbors Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Auxiliary attended the funeral in a body. Burial was made in the Catholic Cemetery in this city and the Auxiliary had charge of the services at the grave.

Agnes McManaman, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Mary (Lyden) McManaman, was born in Plymouth County January 25, 1884, and passed away July 24, 1932, at the age of 48 years, 5 months and 39 days. She came to Hawarden with her parents when seven years old and since then has made her home here. She received her education in St. Mary's School in this city. She was employed in the local telephone exchange for thirteen years during part of which time she held the position of chief operator. She resigned her position with the telephone company to accept a position as bookkeeper for the L.L. Harlan Company and was employed in the same capacity later when the business passed into the hands of Harker & Burket. She served as bookkeeper for these firms for nine years. While employed by others she always proved trustworthy and highly efficient in her work. Later she took a beauty culture course in Minneapolis and about five years ago opened the Modern Beauty Shop in this city. In this business undertaking she met with a marked degree of success and through her courteous and obliging manner she built up an extensive business, drawing customers from much of the surrounding territory. Although in poor health she continued to operate her beauty shop until about three weeks ago, cheerfully rendering service to others even though her health did not permit her to do so easily.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. George Levins of Glencoe, Minnesota, and Mrs. James Jordan of Beresford, South Dakota, and two brothers, Peter and Bernard McManaman of Hawarden. Two nieces and a nephew, Mrs. Lewis Maher of Hawarden and Mrs. Lee Johnson and William Talcott of Waterloo, Iowa, were reared in the McManaman home following the death of their mother and she aided materially in raising these children and was practically a mother to Mrs. Maher, who with her family, has lived with her the past three years. She also leaves fourteen other nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

It may truly be said that Agnes McManaman gave her life to others. She lived a life of wholly unselfish devotion. In times of greatest adversity she never surrendered. Her individual ambitions and aspirations were submerged to make easier the trials of those about her. She was a born optimist and never lost her courage. She possessed a heart of gold and a disposition which always radiated cheerfulness along her pathway. Endowed with a keen mind and a ready wit, she made friends of all with whom she came into contact. Her sunny presence will be sorely missed in this community and hundreds outside the family circle will mourn the passing of a true and trusted friend.

Out of town people who attended the funeral were Mrs. B. Plunkett, M. Curren, Mrs. Frank Chatterton, Mrs. E. Greiner, Mrs. James Condon, Mrs. Art Meis, Mrs. Ora Johnson, H.L. Johnson, Miss Frances Johnson, Miss Edith Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Peterson of Sioux City; Eleanore, Veronica and Fern Duncan of Hudson; Mr. and Mrs. Daldrups of Remsen; Mr. and Mrs. L. Kribel, Mr. and Mrs. John McElvaney and Mr. and Mrs. George McElvaney of Emmet; Mrs. A.L. Craik and Miss Lelia Fritz of Ireton; Mrs. Pauline Maher, Mary Maher, Clarence Maher and Mrs. L.J. Reedy of Beresford; Mrs. Anna Jordan of Woonsocket, South Dakota; Mrs. J.N. Sinclair of Mitchell, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Bankman and children of Centerville; Mrs. Marie Paulson of Sioux Falls and Mrs. George Levins of Glencoe, Minnesota.
