Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Hawarden January 28 for John J. McCarthy, 86, of Hawarden, who died January 25 at the Hawarden Hospital.

Rites were conducted by the Reverend William Garel and burial was made in the church cemetery at Hawarden.

Mr. McCarthy was born in Waterford County, Ireland February 12, 1883. He was married to Mary Lynott September 14, 1915. She died September 26, 1967. Mr. McCarthy worked in England for a time before coming to the United States in 1901. He was employed by the Northwestern Railroad for several years and began farming in 1917. He retired in 1953 and moved into Hawarden.

Survivors include three sons, Edward of Grove, Texas, and James and William, both of Hawarden; a brother, Thomas, of Chicago, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
