Harold Wayne Vande Kieft was born in the Orange City hospital on September 15, 1935. He was the only child of Wilbert and Henrietta (De Jager) Vande Kieft. Harold was baptized at Hospers Christian Reformed church. They farmed at various locations in Sioux County. Harold went to country school and after graduation he drove truck and helped his parents with farming. Harold entered the armed services. He was in the army for six months and then in the Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged. On December 30, 1959 he married Katherine Vonk at Bethel Christian Reformed church in Sioux Center. They made their home on a farm between Orange City and Sioux Center. They spent 58 years on their farm place until Harold moved to Royale Meadows in 2017. They were members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also part of the search committee for a new pastor and enjoyed being part of the church. He attended Men’s Society on Monday nights and found it fulfilling. He drove bus for the Sioux Center Christian School for 30 years. Harold co-owned and operated the Midwest Hay and Straw for 30 years. He was a founding member of the Sioux Center Saddle Club and the Northwest Iowa Horse Show Association. Harold and Kathy were sponsors and superintendents of the 4-H club Sioux County Mounties for a number of years. Harold and Kathy spent many weekends in the summer going to horse shows with their children. They enjoyed riding and showing horses and spending time trail riding with friends. Harold enjoyed farming and sometimes he had the opportunity to farm with his Belgian horses Bob and Chip. His joy was driving his “big boys” in parades and activities.
