She attended country school, then public school, and graduated from the Wadena High School in 1939. Following graduation, she attended the Illinois State College in Normal, Illinois and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls with a teaching certificate in 1941. She taught elementary school in DeSoto, Arlington, and Postville. On January 8, 1945, she married Clinton “Jake” Lammert at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.

While raising her three children, she took college courses, received her degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, and resumed teaching elementary school in the Postville Community Schools. Following Jake's untimely death in 1980 and her retirement in 1984, she relocated to Orange City, where she taught reading courses in the Education Department at Northwestern College and supervised student teachers. She also volunteered for ten years in the MOC-Floyd Valley elementary schools. In 2009, she became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, and in May of 2015, she moved to Keelson Harbor.

Virginia was an active member of the Faith Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school classes and was a member of Lutheran Women Missionary League. She was a former member of P.E.O. and Delta Kappa Gamma. She traveled extensively and enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, a daughter, Patricia (David) Thayer, of Arnolds Park; two sons, Terry (Donna) Lammert, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Kent (Debra) Lammert, of Lincoln, Nebraska; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia (Harry) Cline, of Elgin; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Ray Herwig, Jr. and Robert Gehring, and two sisters, Shirley Deverell and Marjory Kohler.

Memorials will be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund.
