This community was shocked when it learned of the sudden and sad death of Mrs. Ben Lyftogt which occurred at about 8, o'clock on Tuesday morning March 7, 1916.

The direct cause of her death was cardiac heart failure due to complications which had been troubling her the past seven or nine months.

On Thursday of last week she gave birth to a baby boy who survives her, this caused a marked back set and in spite of all that medical services and tender hands could do she passed away on Tuesday morning.

A nurse, from a Sioux City hospital had been in attendance since last Thursday. A specialist from Sioux City who was called in consultation with the local physician also did his best to save her, but gave the family to understand that there was practically no hope for recovery.

Mrs. Ben Lyftogt was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Riemersma, she was born on September 18, 1894 near Orange City, later the family moved to Sheldon where she spent six years of her life, afterwards she with her parents moved to a farm near Newkirk where she grew to young womanhood.

On September 19, 1912 she was married to Mr. Ben Lyftogt and since that time they have resided on a farm 3½ miles north-west of Hospers.

Mrs. Lyftogt was kind and loving wife and mother and her loss is greatly felt by her husband and bereaved relatives. She is survived by her husband and three small children who are to small to realize their loss.

The funeral services were held on Thursday at 12:30 at the house and 1:30 at the Dutch Reformed at Newkirk. Reverend R. D. Douwstra the pastor of that church officiating. Interment was made in the Newkirk Cemetery.
