Boyden Reporter of August 22, 1942

Funeral services were held in Hull for Joseph Wesley Horn who died at the age of 87 years one month and four days. Interment was made in Sheridan Township cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Horn settled on a farm SW of Boyden in 1886. A complete obit of this highly esteemed pioneer resident will be published in full in the Reporter next week.

Boyden Report of Sept 3, 1942

Mr. Joe W. Horn died Saturday morning, August 22nd, 1942, at Iris home in Hull, after a lingering illness of over eight months. Funeral f services were held from the home and at 2.00 o'clock Monday, August 24th from the Protestant Reformed Church in Hull, in charge of Rev. A. Camminga. Interment was in Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden. Pall bearers were Messrs. George Reimers, Paul McCrum, S. G. Vanden Brink, R. Kamminga, H. Maris and John Reimers. The sincere sympathy of a host of friends und The Reporter is extended to the bereaved wife and children. Joseph Wesley Horn was born July 18, 1S55, in Indiana, and came to Marion County, Iowa, by covered wagon when only six weeks old, and there he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Elwood, February 19, 1878, and in the spring of 1886 they moved to Sioux County and established a home on the place southwest of Boyden.

In October, 1899, he was left with a family of eight children, when the mother was called to (he Great Beyond. On April 16th, 1902, he was married to Katie Gritters and this union was blessed with seven children. He resided on the farm until November 16th, 1926, when he retired with his wife to their home here Hull.

He died Saturday August 22nd, 1942, and leaves to mourn his departure his faithful wife, three sons, and eight daughters. Four children preceded him in death. The surviving children are: George, of Boyden; John, of Slayton, Minn Joe A., of Boyden; Mrs. Nora Brown, Mrs. Henry Harman and Mrs. Rich ard Doorenbos, all of Boyden; Mrs. Frank Schafer of Meridan; Mrs. Hattie Kortekamp of Bemidji, Minn. Mrs. Frances Harman of Glenwood, Minn ; Mrs. Albert Scholten of Valley Springs, S. D.; and Mrs. Peter J. Vis of Orange City. Other survivors are two brothers, Mr. Print Horn and Mr. Lute Horn both of Boyden; three sisters: Mrs. Martha Schafer of Orange City; Mrs. Wm Elwood of Glencoe, Minn.; and Mrs. Clyde Schaap of Spirit Lake. Mr. Horn had thirty-two grand children and thirty-two great grandchildren.

Mr. Horn made profession of his faith in his Saviour early in life and was united with the United Presbyterian Church at Boyden until he transferred his membership to the Protestant Reformed Church in Hull Mr. Horn's father fought in the Civil War, a son, George, saw duty in World War I, and a grandson, Walter Harmon, is now in the Air Corps of the U. S Armed Forces. He was 87 years, 1 month, and "4 days old at the time of his passing
