DEATH OF GENERAL FITZHUGH LEE--HE WAS SUDDENLY STRICKEN WITH PARALYSIS

General Fitzhugh Lee, United States Army, retired, and one of Virginia’s foremost sons, died at the Providence Hospital here Friday night of an attack of apoplexy which he suffered early Friday morning on a train while en route from Boston to Washington. After General Lee had been removed to the hospital Friday morning it was evident to the physicuans that his care was a very serious one, but they hoped that his vitality and will power would assist materially in a partial recovery at least from the attack. His condition remained fair, considering the severity of the attack, during the day, but shortly after 9o’clock he began to grow weaker, his breathing became more rapid and his pulse lower, terminating in less than two hours in death. The end was peaceful and without pain, the general remaining conscious until within five minutes of the end.

Civil War Confederate Major General. He was the nephew of Robert E. Lee, graduated from West Point in 1856 and served as a cavalry officer in Texas. At the start of the Civil War he resigned his commission and organized 1st Virginia Cavalry as Lieutenant Colonel. In July 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General and fought in Peninsula campaign. He commanded cavalry at Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and was promoted Major General in September, 1863. In September 1864, at the Third Battle of Winchester, he was wounded and was out of action for the remainder of the war. After the war, he was appointed consul general in Havana and served in the Spanish-American War as a Major General in the US Volunteer Army.

Note: His parents were Sidney and Anna (Mason) Lee and he was married to Ellen B. (Fowle) Lee.
