Death of Cornelius Swier

Cornelius Swier passed away at his home in Rock Valley last Thursday forenoon. He had been invalid for several years, but his death came suddenly, as he was apparently as well as usual the evening before. Mr. Swier was born in Holland and was past sixty-five years old at the time of his death. He came with his family to Rock Valley about five years ago and had since made his home here.

Mr. Swier leaves his wife and two sons, E. J. Swier, of Rock Valley, and Walter Swier, of Hanford, California.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley Tuesday afternoon, and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery for burial. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of [a] number of friends in their sorrow.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Swier, Cornelius, b. 1862, d. 1927, father, Valley View Cem Rock Valley IA.

His death certificate has Cornelius Swier, born March 26, 1862 in Holland; father Walter Swier, mother’s name not known to the informant, Mrs. C. Swier; died at 11:45 a.m. December 1, 1927, cause unknown [dead when the physician arrived].

FindaGrave.com adds his wife, Geertruida Swier (1860-1936) and children Clara Swier Van Duyn (1890-1921), Alida Alice Swier Vanderlugt (1891-1922), Walter Swier (1893-1985), and Edward J. Swier (1899-1982).

The 1920 U.S. census for Colton, Minnehaha County, South Dakota has Cornelius Swier (apparently the same man), age 57, born in the Netherlands, immigrated 1889, naturalized 1894, no occupation, owns his home, speaks English; wife Gertrude (59), born Netherlands, immigrated 1889, naturalized 1894, no occupation, does not speak English; son Edward J. (20), born in Iowa, no occupation; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edward (51) and Juliana (48) DeGroot and their son Adrian (11), immigrated from the Netherlands in 1919.
