From the Rock Valley Bee, December 2, 1927:

FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

Word was received by friends in Rock Valley the first of this week of the death of E. J. Groat at his home in Rapid City, S.D. Mr. Groat was a former resident here for a number of years, and is well known in Rock Valley and vicinity. According to report his death was sudden as friends here received a letter from him and he was cheerful and in good health then and only a few days later a message came telling of his death. A Rapid City paper gives the following account:

Edward J. Groat, 72, died this forenoon as a result of a stroke of paralysis while working in front of the Swandler apartments on St. Joe street. Although not definitely arranged, it is expected that the funeral will probably be held Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Groat moved here in 1920 from Rock Valley, Iowa, making their home here since that time. Besides his widow, he is survived by Mrs. J. L. Sullivan, their only child.

The 1920 U.S. census for Rock Valley shows Edward J. Groat, age 66, born in Canada, immigrated in 1870, naturalized in 1885 or 1895 (handwriting is unclear), a race track horse trainer; and wife Elnora, age 69, born in Michigan.

The South Dakota Cemetery Index on Ancestry.com has Edward J. Groat, died 22 Nov 1927 in Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota; buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
