Leo J. Lechtenberg, 79, of Granville, died Thursday at the Orange City Hospital after a long illness.

Services were held Monday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville. The Reverend Francis J. Nemmers officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Mr. Lechtenberg was born on July 15, 1903, in Granville to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick and Bernadine (Hoefler) Lechtenberg. He was raised and educated there. He married Cleo Tritz on September 24, 1929 at Remsen. The couple lived and farmed in the Granville area and retired in 1965. They moved into Granville on October 1, 1978. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Knights of Columbus and Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James of Le Mars; five daughters, Mrs. Orville (Norma) Schuster of Le Mars, Mrs. Donald (Georgia) Becker of Granville, Mrs. Gerald (Lorna) Hatting of Ashton, of Ashton, Mrs. Orville (Mary Ann) Pottebaum of Alton and Mrs. Jeff (Janet) Zwagerman of Sibley; 31 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hugo of Granville and Ray of Downey, California; two sisters, Mrs. John (Amelia) Pierre of Sioux City and Mrs. Ivan (Agatha) Stay of Huntington Park, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents: two sons, Merlin and Daniel; one grandson; three brothers, Joseph, Victor and Cletus; and two sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Mathilda) List and Mrs. Pat (Justine) Gorman.
