From the Boyden Reporter, June 16, 1927:

JACOB C. MOERMOND

Jacob C. Moermond was born near Maurice, Iowa, on June 14, 1892, and he died at his home west of Boyden Friday night, June 10th, at 10:45. Had he lived four more days he would have been 35 years of age. The cause of his death was acute gastro-enteritis, which developed from the eating of strawberries, which it is said had been sprayed with arsenate of lead. He was ill for some eleven days.

Funeral services for the deceased were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 o’clock at the First Reformed church, with Rev. Neil Stewart, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment was made in the family lot at Sheldon, Iowa.

During the World War he entered the army and was first stationed at Camp Dodge with Company 12, 163rd Depot Brigade, and later he served at Camp Joseph E. Johnston in Florida, to December 30, 1918, after which he was honorably discharged. On October 13, 1920, he was united in marriage with Bertha Van Stryland-Rensink. He united with the United Presbyterian church of Boyden on January 5, 1925, on profession of his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior.

He is survived by his wife and two boys; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Moermond of Sheldon; three brothers, Cornelius of Hollandale, Minn., James of Melvin, Iowa, Dr. William of Everly, Iowa; and six sisters, Mrs. J. C. Reitveld of Chicago Heights, Ill., Mrs. M. N. Oostenburg of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. C. J. Kuyper of Sheldon, and Mayme, Lucy and Martha Moermond, also of Sheldon. All attended the funeral, with the exception of Mrs. Oostenburg.

Deceased was engaged in active farming, having just recently purchased and moved onto the place one mile west of Boyden. He was well known throughout this community, where he grew to manhood. He was a kind husband and father, and his sudden death is indeed a shock to the community.

Members of the Monster Post of the American Legion carried out a military service at the cemetery. The Reporter extends its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.

(Another news note in the same issue of the Reporter says that the funeral was held in the First Reformed church because it was feared the United Presbyterian church would be too small to accommodate all of the attendees.)

RESEARCH NOTES

News notes on his death in the Alton Democrat (June 17) and the Hawarden Independent (June 23) say that the strawberries had been shipped in, it is thought that arsenate of lead residue was on them when picked, and several other people in the area were also reported to have been ill from poisoning.

His death certificate adds his parents’ names, Isaac Moermond, born in Holland, and Mathilda Hollander, born in Ohio.

FindaGrave.com gives his full name, Jacob Cornelius Moermond; buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon; parents Izaak Moermond (1854-1942) and Martina Hollander Moermond (1858-1931); wife Bertha Van Stryland Samuelson (1897-1980), whose first husband had been Bernard J. Rensink (1893-1919).
