It is our sad duty to announce the death of Simon Kuyper. He died at his residence in this city at 7 o'clock this (Friday) morning of small-pox, after an illness of a few days. Mr. Kuyper was nearly 40 years of age.

He was a graduate of Hope College, Michigan, and from there he came to this county, some twelve years ago when this county was new and has passed through all the hardships incident to a new county.

He and his brother, John, engaged in the mercantile business at this place, and were successful in building up a large business. He has for many years been postmaster and justice of the peace and was for six years county superintendent of schools.

In all the relations of life he has always proved himself to be a reliable man and a good citizen. Mr. Kuyper was extensively known and universal respected, and in his death this community loses one of its foremost men.

He leaves a stricken family, consisting of a wife, Maria A. (Vennema) Kuyper and three children, and a large circle of relatives to mourn his untimely death.

Arrived in New York on 15 Jun 1849 sailing from Rotterdam, Netherlands on ship Franzelia.
