Area Obituaries – Mrs. Florence Stegeman

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 29, at the Trinity Reformed Church of Orange City for Mrs. Florence Stegeman, 85. The Rev. Donald Lenderink officiated. Interment was in Hospers cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stegeman, the former Florence Druger, was born July 6, 1887, at Hospers. She married Sip Terpstra at Hospers June 22, 1910. Mr. Terpstra and their son, Eugene, then 7, perished September 17, 1926, in a flood at the Million Dollar Corner. She later married the Rev. M. A. Stegeman who died September 3, 1958.

Surviving are a step-son and daughter, Nathan and Ruth Stegeman, both of Denver, Colo., and a step-sister, Mrs. Grace Toering of Orange City.

From the Alton Democrat, February 7, 1983 – Area Obituaries:

Mrs. M. A. Stegeman, nee Florence Sarah Druger, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 1973, at the age of 85 years, 6 months, and 21 days. She became ill December 13, and was taken to the Municipal Hospital at Orange City, Iowa.

Florence was the daughter of John and Jane (Kruen) Kruger, and she was born in Hospers, Iowa on July 6, 1887. She graduated from the Hospers High School with the class of 1906, and married Mr. Sip Terpstra, the local jeweler, on July 27, 1910. They had one son, Eugene, born April 21, 1919. Both Mr. Terpstra and his 7 year old son were drowned in a flood some 6 miles west of Orange City on Sept. 17, 1926.

In October, 1935, Florence married the Rev. Mannes A. Stegeman, pastor of the First Reformed Church at Hospers, Iowa. Together, they served pastorates at Hospers, Firth, Nebraska, Lester, and Melvin, Iowa. Rev. Stegeman died September 3, 1958 at Orange City.

Funeral services for Florence Stegeman were held at the Trinity Reformed Church of Orange City on Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Donald R. Lenderink pastor. Burial was at Hospers, Iowa.

Mrs. Stegeman is survived by a step-daughter, Ruth Stegeman, and a step-son, Nathan Stegeman, both of Denver, Colorado, and two step-sisters, Mrs. Grace Ganzevoort Toering, of Orange City, and Mrs. Grace Noteboom of Madison, South Dakota..

Surviving nieces include: Agatha, Mrs. Otto Vander Pol, of Sheldon, Iowa; Marie, Mrs. William Lucas, of Hospers, Iowa; Berdella, Mrs. Dean De Vries, of Ukiah, California; Arlys, Mrs. Maynard Schutt, of Sheldon, Iowa; Velma, Mrs. Leroy Van Meeteren, of Sheldon, Iowa. A nephew, Raymond Van Dyke of Hospers, Iowa. The above mentioned nieces and nephew were children of Mabel Roetman Van Dyke, and Albert Van Dyke. Mrs. Genevieve Roetman Barsema is another surviving niece, and is the daughter of Anne Roetman Ottens, of Thomson, Illinois.

Many other relatives and friends were at the funeral to mourn the departure of Mrs. Stegeman. From some distance were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Nieuwenhuis, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. William Zwartz, and Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kruen of Edgerton, Minn.

She appears in the Sioux County Cemetery Index as Terpstra, Florence, b. 6 Jul 1887, d. 27 Jan 1973, ss Sippi, Hospers Cem Hospers IA. Neither she nor her second husband appear in the index under the surname Stegeman.

Her father’s surname, Druger, may also have been spelled Droegever).
