MRS. LEONARD KORTHALS

Funeral services were held Monday, August 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Boyden First Reformed Church for Mrs. Leonard Korthals with Reverend H.G. Schoon and Reverend Ralph Cordes of George Hope Reformed Church officiating. The Pastors text was chosen from Psalm 27:1. A duet Mrs. Ray Smit and Mrs. Larry Salmon, sang "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder". A male quartet consisting of Harold De Boer, Vernon Van Ommeren, John R. VerMeer and Bob Den Hartog sang "It Is Well With My Soul". The congregation sang Psaln 116 verses 1 and 4.
Organist was Mrs. Cornelius Slothouber.

Casket bearers were Leon Korthals, Gary Green, David Krull, James Freerks, Douglas Korthals and Norman Smith, all grandsons of the deceased. Vogelaar Funeral Home of George was in charge of arrangements with burial in the Boyden Cemetery.

Lubbertha Catherina Korthals, oldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Evink, was born July 19, 1891 at Oosterwalde, The Netherlands. She came to the United States with her parents in the year 1904 at the age of 13 years. The family settled at Sioux Center, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and received her schooling in rural schools.

On February 19, 1913 she was united in marriage to Leonard Korthals at Hull, Iowa, by the late Reverend A. W. De Jong. They farmed in the Boyden-Hull area in which the family lived through happy and hard times.

To this union seven children were born: Henry, of George; Gerrit, of Boyden; (Frances) Mrs. John Freerks of George; (Effie) Mrs. Richard Green of Boyden; (Cornelia) Mrs. Evert Van Westen of George; (Kathryn) Mrs. Fred Krull of George and Lawrence Korthals of Boyden.

Mrs. Korthals took sick a few months ago and underwent surgery which she did not recover from. She was called to her Heavenly Home on Thursday, August 10 at the Sheldon Hospital at the age of 76 years and 22 days.

She is survived by her husband Leonard, seven children, two sisters, Mrs. Case Steenhoven of Baily, Michigan; and Mrs. Cora Den Braber of Grand Rapids, Michigan; 16 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren, beside a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Jake Evink and one grandchild.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church for 45 years and a member of the Legion Auxiliary Unit 272.
