Sioux Falls, SD: Gerald Van Voorst, 69, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota died Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 27, at 10:30 AM at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Rock Valley, Iowa with Rev. H. Hofman officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Tuesday, December 26, from 5:30-7:30 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Gerald Van Voorst was born January 28, 1948 in LeMars, Iowa, son of Henry and Gertie (Fluit) Van Voorst. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1966 and honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Conflict from February 15, 1968 to November 3, 1969 where he was injured and received the Purple Heart Award. Gerald was united in marriage with Joyce Jongetjes on December 12, 1969. Gerald was the owner/operator of Gerry’s Concrete of Brandon, South Dakota. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with family. Gerald was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce; 4 children Tricia (Todd) O’Brien of San Tan Valley, Arizona, Cara Franklin of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Gerry Van Voorst of Brandon, South Dakota, and Amy (Scott) O’Brien of Lenexa, Kansas; 7 grandchildren Jordan and Alyssa O’Brien, Isaac and Tyra Franklin, Cora, Ava and Mya O’Brien; siblings Jeanette (John) Van Ginkel, Teunis (Jacqi) Van Voorst, Clarence (Carol) Van Voorst, Henry (Judy) Van Voorst, Cynthia Amick, Mary (Harvey) Driesen, Joann Driesen, and Ruth (Jake) Anker; sisters-in law, Carrie Van Voorst and Shirley Van Voorst and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gertie Van Voorst; son, Gregory Van Voorst; brothers, Jacob and John Van Voorst; brothers-in-law, Harold Driesen and Gary Amick; and mother-in-law, Cora Jongetjes; and some nieces and nephews.

Gerald was beloved by those close to him for his infectious laugh and playful spirit. He was known for being kind, hard-working, and generous. He will be missed greatly.
