Mrs. Martha Koele, 90, of Hull, died Wednesday, August 4, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 7, at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Reverend Steven Bierly officiated. Interment followed at the Hope Cemetery in Hull under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Martha was born July 17, 1909, at Hull, the daughter of Cornelius C. and Dirkje (Roos) Bos. She attended rural school until the family moved to Orange City, when she was in the third grade. A year later, the family returned to Hull, where Martha graduated from Hull High School in 1926. She then took normal training and taught rural school north of Hull.

Martha married Bert Koele at the Bos home on February 26, 1932. The couple lived on the Bos family home on Division Street in Hull. Bert and Martha then brought a farm southeast of Hull and lived there until 1960, when they moved into Hull. Bert died in August of 1978.

Martha worked as an aide in Pleasant Acres for seven years and later was a foster grandparent for Hope Haven. She became a resident of Pleasant Acres in April of 1996.

She was a member of the American Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir and was active in the Reformed Church Women’s Ministries and a Bible study group.

Martha is survived in her three children, Robert of Tempe, Arizona, Delora and her husband, Clarence Carson, of Yankton, South Dakota, and Larry of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson; two sisters, Ella Boeve and Alida Bos; and two brothers, Albert and Cornelius.
