Rev. J. M. Johnson Of Rock Falls Dies Suddenly Friday

The Rev. J. M. Johnson, 74, visitation pastor and assistant to the Rev. E. A. Henrichs, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Falls, died suddenly at 3:50 p.m. Friday. The body was moved to the Behrens Mortuary where friends may call from 4 until 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be a 2 p.m. Monday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Falls, with the Rev. Henrichs and the Rev. Warren Weeg, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sterling, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park.

A memorial has been established.

The Rev. John Meint Johnson was born April 18, 1891, near LeMars, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johnson. Ha was baptized and confirmed in Christ Lutheran Church, LeMars, by Pastor J. D. Meyer. Pastor Johnson graduated from Luther College, St. Paul, Minn., in 1912 and from Luther Seminary, St, Paul, Feb. 1915. He was ordained in St. John’s Lutheran Church, LeMars, Feb. 14, 1915, by the Rev. J. J. Wollmer, Craig, Iowa. Pastor Johnson was married to Amanda Welke of Fall Creek, Wis., June 5, 1918, in Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. B. Kemena of Loyal, Wis. Ho was installed in Trinity Lutheran Church, Fall Creek, Feb. 21, 1915 by Prof. H. Doermann and served his parish until 1922. In 1916 he organized S t Luke’s congregation in Foster, Wis., and services were first held in a public-school A church was built in 1917. la UM fall of 1918 the pastor of WL Paul's Lutheran Church, Augusta. Accepts Call

Pastor Johnson accepted a call from the mission board to organize a mission church Marshfield. Wis., which was called the First English Lutheran Church, and the Johnson family moved there in 1922. A church was built there in 1923 and Pastor Johnson was installed in this charge by the Rev El. Beckman, Wausau, Wis.

A call was received from Immanuel Lutheran Church. Golden, Illinois and he was installed pastor there in August of 1924, serving until July 14, 1940, when he was installed pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Peru, Illinois. by the district president Dr. M. Doerman. He served there until his retirement from the active ministry Feb 15 1961.

1963 he joined the staff of Immanuel Lutheran of Rock Falls. Pastor and Mrs. Johnson moved to the present address Feb. 22, 1961. He served in various capacities in the American Lutheran church. He was a member of the board of directors of Lutheran Homes for Children and Aged. Muscatine, la., serving for five years as president, and advisory pastor for the Illinois District Brotherhood of the American Lutheran Church for more than 16 years.

Feb. 25 of this year he celebrated the golden anniversary of his ordination when special services were conducted in the Rock Falls Church,

Surviving him are his wife, Amanda; two daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Jean) Liefeld, Dilworth, Minn., and Mrs. John (Marian) Erickson, Sterling; one son, Roland w. Johnson, Vineland, N. J.; two brothers, William Johnson, Battle Creek, Mich. and J. F. Johnson, Mendota; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Beitelspacher, Rockwell City, Iowa and Mrs. George Lubben, Sioux City, Iowa, and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded by one son, Kenneth W who died January 4, 1960 and one brother.
