Horace B. Hegg, 88, died on April 13, 2017 and Gretchen T. Hegg died April 20, 2017. Both were residents of Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell, IA. They both were formerly of Hudson.

Horace was born Feb.1, 1929 in Decorah IA. to Dr. Lester and Palma (Erickson) Hegg. Gretchen was born on June 26, 1929 in Leland, Iowa, to Gilbert and Clara Charlson) Thompson. They were married on June 4, 1955 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leland.

Horace graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1946. In 1950 he graduated from Grinnell College and from 1951-1953, he serve with the U.S. Marine Corps. He then taught Science at the Hudson High School. He also worked in the Waterloo School District, and later with AEA-7.

Gretchen graduated from Forest City High School in 1945. She graduate from Waldorf College in 1947 and taught elementary school in Garner, Marshalltown, and Humboldt. She then was a homemaker, and later was a teacher associate in the Hudson Schools.

They were both active members of the St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hudson; Gretchen in the Women's Group (WELCA) and Horace in the design and construction of the distinctive cross in the sanctuary of the church. They were both members of the Retired Teachers Association of Black Hawk County, (Horace was past president). Horace was a former chairman of the city of Hudson Library building committee, past pres. of the Waterloo Senior Men's Golf League, and a member of the board of directors of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, which later became New Aldaya Lifescapes.

Survived by two sons, Philip (Kimberly) of Brooklyn and Christian of Orland Park, ILL; two daughters, Sara (Jim) Hegg-Dunne of Grinnell, and Erika (Jack) Arendt of Coralville; 10 grandchildren, Zachary, Vincent, Sierra, Nicole, Katelin, ELi, Philip, Prescott, Caroline and Catherine; five great-grandchildren, Sophie, Kaden, Brody, Hudson and Hayden; Horace's brother, Peer (Pat) Hegg of Hacienda Heights, CA; Gretchen's two brothers, Herbert Thompson of Moline, ILL, and David (Sue) Thompson of Irvine, CA; and her sister, Marcia Turcotte, of Minneapolis. MN.

Preceded in death by their parents and Gretchen's four sisters, Alice Tett, Winnifred Thompson, Catherine Jorgensen and Margaret Schwidder; and a brother, Gerald Thompson.

Services 10:30 Sat. May 13, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church Hudson, with burial in Hudson Cemetery. Locke Funeral Home of Waterloo had arrangements. Horace donated his body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
Memorials may be directed to the church.
