Hiram J. Herter 1884-1902
One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in Hawarden for a long time was that of Hiram J
Herter last Sunday morning. He was taken sick only a few days be fore with that dread disease, diphtheria, in its most malignant form and despite the efforts of kind and loving hands and medical aid his life rapidly ebbed away. For pro cautionary measures for the family and community the remains were interred the same day. The deceased was born in, Hawarden July 17, 1884-, and would have been 18 years of age at his next birthday.

The fact that friend and neighbors wore unable to assist the afflicted parents in their sad hour makes such deaths seem like a calamity. The sympathy to everyone is extended to the bereaved ones in their great affliction.
