Born: November 2, 1907
Died: February 17, 1927

Richard Christopher Klein, the youngest of two sons of Mr. and Mrs. August Klein, was born on the 2nd day of November, 1907, near Doon, Iowa. When about 3 months old he was, by Holy Baptism, dedicated to Tribune God. On the 7th of November, 1920, he renewed, on his part, the baptismal Covenant, pledging faithfulness to his Lord and Savior in Confirmation. And now, as we have good reason to believe, the Lord in His grace has granted him the crown of life which is promised to all that are faithful.

Richard has always been a quiet boy, not given to many words, neither given to complaint. It was on the 28th of February that his father noticed by the tears that were steaming down the boys face, that something was wrong. On being asked, Richard complained of terrible earache. But his ailment was of a more serious nature. Four days later, the physician was convinced that a mastoid had developed and that an operation was inevitable.

Knowing this to be a serious operation, Richard prepared for it, by partaking, together with his father, of Holy Communion and by committing himself unto the Lord. An hour later he was taken to the hospital in Sioux City and given under the care of a Specialist. This was on the 1st of February, on the same day he underwent the operation, but this operation failed to bring the expected relief; high fever continued and the boy had to suffer great pain. At last it became apparent that a second operation was necessary, and it was preformed on the 12th of February. But human care and medical skill were of no avail: 5 days after the second operation, on the 17th of February, Richard died at the age of 19 years, 3 months and 15 days.

While his parents and brother and other relatives and friends mourn him, they have at the same time a great comfort in the assurance that Richard has been taken to his eternal home in Heaven. For assuredly: God to whom the boy took his refuge in his days of anguish, his Savior, to whom he called so fervently for help in hours of pain, that same God and Savior has heard the applications of his child and granted him help and relief beyond asking and expectation.

Richard was buried February 20, 1927, from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Reverend Goeringer taking his text from Luke 22, 32. He was buried in the Church Yard, nearby.
