JOSEPH KLEIN DIES IN HIS 58TH YEAR--Hospers Grain Dealer Passes On From Effects of Cancer--BORN IN HOLLAND--Eldest of Ten Children--Partner Klein Bros. Line of Grain Elevators

Joseph Klein of Hospers passed away Tuesday evening September 13th, at the home of his brother, Alex Klein, in Alton, where he had been seriously ill for a month from the effects of cancer.

Mr. Klein was a prominent business man of Hospers and until a few months was active in the interests of the town and Dutch Reformed Church, of which he was a member.

Four years ago last June his wife preceded him to the great Beyond.

Four children, the eldest 14 years old, survive their parents. The sympathy of the community is with them and with the sorrowing brothers and sisters in the loss of a devoted father and brother. The town loses a respected citizen whose Christian life may well be an example to all.

Joseph Klein was born September 25, 1863 in Deventer, Holland. He was the eldest of ten children, of whom seven brothers and sisters are living. In October of 1886, Mr. and Mrs. Willem and Hendrika (Brink) Klein and family, came to the United States, settling on a farm near Orange City, where Joseph's boyhood was spent.

He was married to Miss Hattie Wierenga about fifteen years ago and went to Hospers to work for the Button Elevators Company. Four years ago he and his brothers Will and Henry bought the three Button elevators at Hospers, Alton and Inwoodand he has since been in charge of the Hospers elevator.

Mrs. Klein died in 1917 from lung fever. Since that time three children remained with their father and the youngest Clarence, with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klein of Alton. The other children are Susie, Henrietta and Willie.

Brothers and sisters surviving are Chris Klein of Portland, Oregon; Henry, Alton; Will, Inwood; Alexander, Alton; Mrs. William Jiskoot, Alton; Mrs. George Swienink, Salem, Oregon; Mrs. T. Dykema, Bigelow, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held Friday September 16th, at 1 o'clock at the Alex Klein home in Alton and 2:30 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hospers, Reverend De Jong conducted the services at the house and Reverend Douwstra at the church.
