From the Sioux County Index (Hull), July 9, 1926:

AUGUST KARSTENS DIES

We reported last week, the accident of Mr. August Karstens, son of Mr. Henry Karstens of this place, at McCain, South Dakota, where he fell from a scaffold while repairing his elevator. Mr. Karstens died from the effects of his injuries and was buried at Elkton, South Dakota, Saturday.

He is survived by his wife and five children, three daughters, one married, and 2 sons. He was forty-seven years old.

Those from this vicinity, besides his father and sister Augusta, who were in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Herman Beckman, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Karstens, Mr. Henry Karstens, Mr. Herman Schuett and daughter of Boyden, Mr. Henry Schuett and Henry Breuer. Sincere sympathy of all the old time Hull friends is extended to the bereaved relatives.

[The report of his accident simply said that he had fallen in his elevator and broken both legs.]

FindaGrave.com has him as August William Karstens, born 29 Dec 1978 in Germany; died 2 Jul 1926 in Brookings, South Dakota; buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Elkton, SD; spouse Lena Kartje Karstens (1878-1930); child William Henry Karstens (1905-1963).

The 1920 U.S. census for Parnell, Brookings County, South Dakota has August Karstens, age 40, a farmer, born in Germany, immigrated 1882, naturalized 1888; wife Lena (41), born in Austria of German parents, immigrated 1894, naturalized; children Minnie (17), William (14), Alma (12), and Arthur (10), all born in Iowa, and Gerald (5-5/12), born in South Dakota.

The register of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, St. Paul church, Hull (Ancestry.com) has an entry for child Alma Katherine, born 17 May 1907, parents August W. Karsten and Caroline nee Kartje.

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) has August William Karstens, born Dec. 29, 1878, resident of rural Elkton, SD, a farmer, a citizen by his father’s naturalization before majority, wife Lena; medium height and build, brown eyes, brown hair.
