From the Rock Valley Bee, June 25, 1926:

SUDDEN DEATH OF JOHN FLITCH

Death came most unexpectedly to John Flitch, of Doon, at Hartford, S.D., last Thursday morning, and news of his passing greatly shocked the home community, which he had left three days before, apparently in the best of health.

Mr. Flitch lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Flitch, at Doon. He had extensive land interests of his own and looked after these and land interests of his parents. He had a farm near Hartford and had gone there to help make some repairs made necessary by a windstorm. He worked hard on Wednesday. On Thursday morning he complained of not feeling well. Distress becoming more marked he decided to consult a physician and his tenant drove him to Hartford. On the way his condition seemed to become more and more serious. He died in the Doctor’s office half an hour after his arrival in Hartford. The doctor gave acute dilation of the stomach as the cause of his death.

A. H. Lockwood, of the Lockwood and Pirwitz undertaking firm, drove to Hartford Thursday with the hearse and brought the body to Rock Rapids, whence it was taken to Doon. The funeral was held at Doon Sunday afternoon. The Congregational church was not large enough to accommodate the large number of friends who gathered to pay their respects to the memory of a good man, a kindly neighbor, a loyal friend, a devoted son and a first class citizen. Every body who knew John Flitch respected him and liked him. Rev. Carl P. Bast, pastor of the Rock Rapids Congregational church, conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were C. Ross, E. C. Konichek, Gus Rieke, Andy Jansma, John Holland, and A. W. Anderson, all of Doon.

The deceased man was born at Monticello, Ia., January 29, 1876. His parents moved to a farm in Sioux county, southwest of Doon, when he was 10. In 1919 the family moved to Doon. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Klein and Miss Anna Flitch, all of Doon. He was a nephew of Mrs. Henry Guyan, of Rock Rapids. – Rock Rapids Review.
