FUNERAL SERVICES FOR FORMER ALTON RESIDENT HELD MONDAY HERE

Miss Ellen Kinney suffered a severe stoke about two and one-half years ago from which she never fully recovered. Last Wednesday the family were called to Mery Hospital, Council Bluffs, where she was cared for but before they could reach her the Last Sacraments had been administered and she passed away peacefully Saturday, with her sisters, Sister Annette of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Frank Arens of Satern, South Dakota; and her brother Jerome of Sioux City, at her bedside. As a slight improvement Thursday night seemed to indicate no immediate danger, her sister, Mrs. Jacob List and brother James returned to their homes.

Sunday the body was taken to the home of her brother James at Alton and the funeral was held Monday at St. Mary’s Church, Very Reverend M.A. Schemel officiating.

Ellen was the eldest daughter of Michael and Margaret (Allen) Kinney, well known pioneer settlers who came to Iowa in the early seventies. She was born November 19, 1876. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and was a kind, loving and truly unselfish character which greatly endeared her to both young and old. The many friends who came from Sioux City, Dell Rapids, Sheldon, Le Mars, Struble, Remsen, Granville, Maurice, Marcus, Oyens and the surrounding country, testify to the esteem in which she was held. For the last several years she made her home with her sister, Mrs. Frank Arens and family, now of Salem, South Dakota.
